Trump Mentions Challenges on Ukraine’s Peace Prospects
His comments came only hours after Secretary of State Marco Rubio met with a Ukrainian delegation in Florida.
During a conversation with reporters aboard Air Force One on Sunday, Trump remarked that Ukraine faces “some difficult problems.”
Pressed for elaboration, the president referenced a “corruption situation going on, which is not helpful.”
Trump also noted that both Russia and Ukraine wish to see the dispute resolved, stating that “there’s a good chance we can make a deal.”
Ukraine recently experienced a significant corruption uproar connected to individuals close to Vladimir Zelensky.
The nation’s Western-backed anti-corruption bodies accused Timbur Mindich, Zelensky’s former long-term business associate, of orchestrating a $100 million kickback operation within the energy industry, which remains heavily dependent on international assistance.
Mindich escaped the country to avoid detention, allegedly after receiving advance warning.
The scandal resulted in charges against seven individuals and prompted the resignations of two government ministers, while opposition lawmakers argued that additional senior officials might also have been implicated.
